Vining, Editor WEDNESDAY, JUNE~ToT 1953 Weather Tuesday: high 90, low G4, rain .80, Rel. Hum. 67 . . . Tornadoes in Michigan, Ohio and New England kill 205 people, 56 being in Massachusetts. Worcester area tornado worst since 1875. Over 350 people were treated in Worcester hospitals. Hundreds of homes were leveled and cars flat tened and tossed about like toys. The Red Cross is asking for blood plasma for the storm victims . . . Armistice negotiators are having a recess in peace talks. Prospects for peace are brighter than ever. South ^Koreans don’t want peace at the price the Reds ask. The Southerners want a united Korea first . . . Highways are being crowded now with people coming to the mountains and the lakes to cool off. The roadside picnic tables above Trvon are in constant use. The Pacolet river basin draws the cool air down in a refreshing draft . . . The final Bridge party of the season for the Tryon Women’s Bridge Assn, at the Country Club was played Tuesday. Winners for the season were first, Mrs. J. A. Simpson; Mrs. George C. Vance, second; Mrs. H. Lan Moore, Mrs. Carroll G. Bennett, Miss Jane Borwn and Mrs. Nelson Jackson in order named. Tuesday winners were Mrs. Nelson Jackson,, first: Mrs. Simpson second; Mrs. L. W. Anderson third; Miss Jane -Continued on Back Page Lt.-Governor Westmoreland Speaks at Tryon Kiwanis S. J. Westmoreland of Marion, Kiwanis Lieutenant-Governor of District 1, spoke to the Kiwanis Club Tuesday at Oak Hall. Gov. Westmoreland spoke on “American ism” and told of the many things that he was thankful for because he was an American, but that we must always be alert to protect our way of life. After his speech, Mr. Westmore land answered questions and told of the many projects being car ried on by the various clubs in Division One. George Comer, who has recently returned for a visit from . Bogota, Colombia, answered questions on conditions in Colom bia. Guests of the club were Geo. Comer. Bogota, Colombia, and Try on; Bill Wyatt, Marion. Albert Simpson was in charge of the program. Cay Blades Meet Friday The Gay Blades Garden Club will meet Friday at 3 p. m., at the home of Mrs. Nelson Jackson II from where the members will go to the Herbarium at Pearson’s Falls. Oliver Freeman will conduct a tour of the Herbarium. Admis sion 25c. Gaines Rites Saturday The body of Roy Gaines. 57, who died Thursday in the Veterans Administration Hospital at Van couver, Washington, will arrive in Tryon Saturday morning. Grave side services will be held Satur day at 4 p. m., at the Tryon Ceme tery with the Rev. Henry Hearn officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the Polk County Me morial Post No. 250.
